Mockingjay movie review

Hi there,
I just got back from the cinemas where I saw Mockingjay part 1. It was so good! A lot better than the first part of the book because that was quite slow. This booktalk isn’t going to have a non-spoiler section because there isn’t any point. If you haven’t seen the others you should just leave now. Bye.

Okay so I actually had some pretty big doubts about Mockingjay. The first half of the book wasn’t fantastic, it was actually really slow. I was just blown away by the film from the very first scene. It was so simple opening on Katniss reciting what had happened to her. It really showed the audience the amount of damage the games had done and what Peeta being taken had produced. It was a gorgeously done scene and then we got to see Finnick for the first time and see him, no longer happy, but completely insane. Driven mad by losing Annie after he was so sure he would get to see her again.
Visiting twelve was the first indication we were given of the destruction the capital had done. It was so sad to see it all destroyed and then to see the land just filled with bodies. I cried at that part because mass killings are just so upsetting. Especially because it was Katniss’ home. I was a bit confused though because she stepped on a skull but the killing had happened only maybe a month or two before so the bodies would still be fresh, they would have skin and hair etc. It was really funny when Katniss took Buttercup but it was really scary when she found the white rose left by President Snow.
The next note-worthy scene was when she saw Peeta on the television in the cafeteria (literally the only way I can think to describe it). It was so painful to see him so upset and to see the people booing him and to see Katniss so scared and hurt for him. The viewings of Peeta only got worse as he began to look more beat-up and sick. He was too thin and too ill and it scared the life out of me (despite having read the book).
When Katniss demanded his, Annie’s and Johanna’s saving with full immunity I was so thankful. I thought they would kill Peeta for saying what he did, or at the very least leave him there and not bother saving him. It was such a powerful scene for Katniss and you really got a proper look at how much Peeta means to her.
Effie was introduced and I was so happy although she wasn’t supposed to be released until later. Seeing her was quite heart breaking because she usually looks so glamarous and is quite a happy person, but she just looked so sad. She became Katniss’ escort and that was so nice. The outfit Cinna made for Katniss to be the Mockingjay was just gorgeous. She looked so strong and proud in it, like the Katniss that she was.
The attempted propoganda video was so funny. Katniss seemed so stiff and fake and when the background was put there it just looked ridiculous. But then of course that inspired them to create some real footage which was just amazing.
They visited 8 and it was so terrifying to see all those people injured. They believed in Katniss so much and they all paid for it terribly. Katniss’ first real fighting was in that scene and even then it wasn’t much. She shot down the planes but it was too late. They all burned in an explosion and all were killed. Katniss’ grief was felt so strongly because of Jennifer’s incredible acting skills. Her speech was so inspiring and really warmed my heart. The powerful way she spoke and the intense words she used all assisted in making her speech so memorable.
Visiting 12 again was so heart breaking with Gale talking about what exactly happened. The Hanging Tree song was gorgeous, Jennifer sung it so well. Then that propaganda video was made and it was beautiful. I cried so much when the revolution in 5 happened and they all marched singing “The Hanging Tree”. Seeing people come together, with so much hope invested in one person, really makes me happy and sad, thus creating tears.
The tears did not stop later because Peeta heard her voice. Her heard her and he looked so afraid and so confusing and so full of love. He just wanted to be near her and see her so much. It was so sad to see him even more ill and then be dragged away when he gave the warning about the bombing coming to 13. The bombing was quite an intense scene but it made it quite lighter when Katniss was playing with that cat. That is, until she had a revelation about what was happening with Peeta and the other tributes; that they were there to toy with their emotions.
The attempted rescue and Finnick’s propaganda overlapped. I was too focussed on Finnick’s propaganda to pay much attention to the rescue. They were finally explaining what went on with Finnick and how the capital sold and brought his body after the games. The secrets revealed were interesting to know and added more to the storyline. Finnick’s story is really the one I wanted more on and I was so happy when it was included in the film.
The rescue went well, despite the systems being back up and then there was the meetings. Johanna looked so ill and it was just heartbreaking. She had been broken by the Capital and it was horrible. Finnick seeing Annie again made me cry so much, it was so heart warming and to see him with the woman he loved so much was too much. The Katniss saw Peeta. He looked horrible and then lunging at her throat like that. It was too horrible to believe.
The last scene was the most horrific at all with Peeta. He was thrashing and writhing wanting to be free and it was just heart breaking to watch. I couldn’t stand the fact that that sweet boy we all know and love was turned into a monster who had been strapped down like that.

Mockingjay part 1 was a really amazing film; I loved it so much. It was done really well and loved everything about it, from start to finish. I cannot wait for Mockingjay part 2.

Signing off, Charlie.

Cry worthy books

Hi there,

So I have been really terrible at uploading recently because I have been crazy busy with exam prep and stuff. Today I will be telling you my top 8 books that made me cry. This list will be in order from least to most cry worthy. Just a warning there are obviously spoilers in this so read at your own risk.

1) The Giver by Lois Lowry: I’ve chosen this book because of the “releasing” scene. There are some things in books I just really cannot handle and that was one of them. It just made me so sad that they did that to innocent little children, it really upset me.

2) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K.Rowling: Do I really need to explain this one? It is quite obviously because of Cedric. It was his Dad’s reaction that did it really. It was the first proper character death that I ever read in a series and I had no idea it would be that painful. I had no idea what I was in for.

3) Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare: The saddest part of this for me was Will’s death but he was old when it happened so it wasn’t actually that sad for me. I did cry quite a bit but because he was old this isn’t rated higher on the scale. Jem’s death was sad as well but it just didn’t hit me like others did.

4) City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare: No body I loved that much died in this book but I thought Izzy and Magnus were going to die and they were my favourite characters in the series. I just couldn’t stand the thought of them dying so I just started to sob.

5) The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult: Part of this book, as you may or may not know, takes place during WWII and involves a concentration camp. The intense imagery used in this was too much for me to handle and the fact that all of it was real makes it even more horrific. The saddest part wasn’t even the death of my favourite character it was just the experience the Jewish people had during Nazi Occupation.

6) The Fault in our Stars by John Green: If you have either read or seen TFIOS you will understand why this book is on there. Augustus was so innocent and young and he did not deserve to die.

7) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K.Rowling: This book from beginning to end was a roller coaster ride of emotions. The battle of Hogwarts at the conclusion of the series was the hardest part to read about. All the character deaths and the crumbling of a place I viewed as home. It was all just so hard to deal with.

8) Allegiant by Veronica Roth: Literally no words needed. Just. Allegiant.

That’s all for this tag. Feel free to comment and tell me what books made you cry the most. I tag Sherlockianbooklover and I tag all of you.

Ultimate Harry Potter tag

Hi there,
I just finished Game of Thrones but I actually won’t be doing a booktalk on it because it is so long and complex that my booktalk would be the length of a novel. Instead I will be doing the ultimate Harry Potter tag that consists of 30 questions about Harry Potter.

1) Favourite book?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for sure.

2) Least favourite book?
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Everything sucked in Harry’s life (except DA) and Umbridge was there. Need I say more?

3) Favourite movie?
Probably Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. It is one of the best book to movie adaptations I’ve seen.

4) Least favourite movie?
Probably The Half Blood Prince. It was not a particularly good book to movie adaptation at all and Half Blood Prince is one of my favourite books.

5) Favourite quote?
“Do you remember me telling you we were practised non-verbal spells?”
“Yes sir.”
“No need to call me sir, professor.”

6) Favourite Weasley?
Ron. Or Fred. Or George. Either of those three really.

7) Favourite female character?
Obviously Hermione. She is awesome on so many levels and I really connect with her, more so than I have with a lot of other characters.

8) Favourite villain.
Bellatrix Lestrange. She was the best and most creative villain out of all of them. She was so unique and fun to read about.

9) Favourite male character?
Either Ron or Neville. Ron because he is really funny but also actually really cares about his friends. Neville because against all the odds stacked against him he was, really, the bravest of them all. His biggest fear was Snape and he faced him every single day.

10) Favourite professor?
It has to be McGonagall. She is the best teacher in the series and is so awesome in the last book when there is the big battle.

11) Would you rather A) wash Snape’s hair or B) spend a day listening to Lockhart rant about himself?
Obviously wash Snape’s hair. It isn’t that bad and washing his hair might take 5 minutes whereas listening to Lockhart all day might kill me.

12) Would you rather duel A) an elated Bellatrix or B) and angry Molly?
Definitely an elated Bellatrix. Did you see what happened last time someone crossed angry Molly?

13) Would you rather travel to Hogwarts via A) Hogwarts Express or B) Flying Car?
Hogwarts Express. I want to ride the train all day and eat the sweets off of the trolley. There really is no option against the Hogwarts Express.

14) Would you rather A) Kiss Voldemort or B) give Umbridge a bubble bath?
Kiss Voldemort. I’d rather that than have to deal with Umbridge.

15) Would you rather A) ride a Hippogriff or B) ride a Firebolt?
Hippogriff hands down.

16) Is there a character you felt differently about in the movies?
Yes Ginny. In the books she was a really awesome and fierce character but in the film she felt very 2-dimensional and fake.

17) Is there a movie you preferred to the book?
No there isn’t. Things were left out of all the films that I absolutely adored in the books. I will always choose the text over the picture.

18) Richard Harris or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore?
I think they were both perfect portraying the different Dumbledore’s that they portrayed.

19) Your top thing (person or event) that wasn’t in the movie that you wanted there the most?
The part in the Deathly Hallows were Dudley tells Harry that he isn’t a waste of space. Out of everything missing in the films that is the one thing I am most mad about.

20) If you could remake any of the Harry Potter movies which would it be?
Probably the Half Blood Prince. I would make it a lot closer to the book.

21 Which house was your first gut feeling you’d be a part of?
Gryffindor. I was very young when the first film came out (yes I saw most of the films before I read the books) and I just really felt I belonged there.

22) Which house were you actually sorted into on Pottermore?
Gryffindor, much to my delight.

23) Which class would be your favourite?
I’m really interested in the Transfiguration and Charms stuff so those two.

24) Which spell do you think would be most useful to learn?
Accio. I’d never have to move again.

25) Which character do you think you’d instantly become friends with?
Hermione. Like I said before, I feel a strong connection to Hermione. We have a lot in common so I think we would definitely be friends.

26) If you could own one of the three Hallows, which would it be?
The Invisibility Cloak. How useful would that be?

27) Is there any aspect of the books you’d want to change?
Yes I would have Harry not name his child Albus Severus but Rubeus or Remus. One of those two.

28) Favourite Marauder?
I would have to say Moony, Padfoot and Prongs. I honestly can’t choose between the three. Together they sound like so much fun and I love their individual traits.

29) If you could bring one character back to life, which would it be?
Fred. I cannot imagine George without him. They were never two souls; they were two bodies one soul and I think living without Fred would mean George would never be the same again.

30) Hallows or Horcruxes?
Hallows obviously. Why become immortal when I can just become the Master of Death?

That’s it for the Ultimate Harry Potter tag. I tag SherlockianBooklover and bookishrebels. I also tag any of you who love Harry Potter as much as I do.

Book Gods of Olympus tag

Hi there,
So there isn’t going to be an explainer this time because I actually just wrote this post and it decided to be annoying and delete so lets just get straight into it, the title is explanation enough.

Zeus: Name your favourite fictional leader, good or bad?
Probably Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games series. She is such an amazing character and seems to be a born leader. The courage she has is incredible, to have gone through the games twice. She is one of my all time favourite fictional female leads and she is definitely one of the best leaders.

Hera: Who are your favourite fictional parents?
Mr and Mrs Weasley from the Harry Potter series. There aren’t many parents in books because they are usually dead, but Mr and Mrs Weasley are parents central to the plot and they are so amazing. They basically adopted Harry as their own child and Mrs Weasley knitted Harry a jumper and she had only met him once! Who else is that kind? They are really incredible parents.

Demeter: What fictional food would you like to try?
Any of the magical food from the Wizarding World. The sweets especially, they look so amazing. Also Butter Beer. Real Butter Beer that isn’t just creaming soda and cream. That would be nice too.

Poseidon: Name a book where water is central, either in setting or plot.
The PJO series by Rick Riordan is really the only one I can think of. Water is not really essential to any other book I’ve read. Percy is the son of the sea God so water is essential to his awesomeness.

Dionysus: Which character would you most like to have a party with?
Jace Herondale from the Mortal Instruments series. He looks like a really fun person to have a party with, especially if he was in a good mood after stabbing a demon or something. Either Jace or Finnick Odair from the Hunger Games series. He also looks like an incredibly fun person to party with. Can I pick both? Yeah I’m going to do that.

Apollo: Name a great debut book
Divergent by Veronica Roth. Is there really any other option? Divergent is the first book in the series and it is the best book in the series! I have never loved the first book in a series better than this one.

Artemis: Who is your favourite female heroine?
Tris Prior from the Divergent series. She was so brave and selfless and put everyone else before her. Her selflessness and bravery really got to me and made me see what good these two traits too when put together. If you’ve read Allegiant you will know the extent of her bravery and will understand why I love her so much.

Athena: Name a character who is wise.
Hermione Granger. Is there really any competition. She is the wisest of the wise.

Hermes: If you could travel to any fictional setting (real world or fantasy) where would you go?
Hogwarts. Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hogwarts. It will seriously always be Hogwarts so matter how many more fictional worlds I read about. If  I am 60 and my Hogwart’s letter comes I will actually go and be a first year like all the little eleven year olds. I will always want to go.

Hephaestus: If you could have any fictional tool made (for example a weapon or a gadget), what would you want?
A wand. Why would I not want all the magic? Like the last question the answer to this will always be wand.

Ares: What is your favourite fictional battle?
The battle at the end of The Deathly Hallows. It was such an amazing battle and when I watch the movie the score always makes me cry. It was so good with the spiders and giants coming and the statues came to life and the House Elves came out from the kitchens and were stabbing peoples ankles! It was just so intense and amazing to read about.

Aphrodite: What is your ultimate ship?
Oh I have so many I don’t think I could choose just one. Sizzy, Clace, Wessa, Romione, Hinny, Cas/Anna, Ronks, FourTris, Leo/Calypso, Percabeth and so many more my brain will explode from all the love!

Hades: If you could petition Hades to bring any fictional character back from the dead who would you choose?
It would obviously be her. I mean that death is the one that hit me the hardest out of any death I have ever read about. It was like I lost my best friend, I just could not handle it. I was sobbing for hours and, given the chance, I would absolutely bring her back.

If you could be a Goddess of anything what would you want to be and what do you think would fit your personality?
I would want to be the Goddess of literature. I love to read and books are obviously a massive part of my life so I think I would do well as the Goddess of Literature. That would so awesome, people could give me books to worship me and I, in turn, would bless them with a book I think they would really love to read.

Alright so that is it for the Gods of Olympus book tag. I hope you enjoyed it and I tag Sherlockianbooklover and Bookishrebels. Thanks for reading everyone.
